Overgrown Back Yard Cleanup & Pond Restoration

Before the cleanup: the pond beside the pergola deck buried in weeds and dead brush, with saplings and tall grass crowding the fence behind it.

This project took a back yard that had been completely overtaken and returned it to open, usable ground. Saplings, brush and vines had grown off both fence lines and into the yard, dead grass stood knee-high, and the rock-edged pond beside the pergola deck had all but disappeared under weeds.

The cleanup worked through the yard from the fence lines in. Saplings, brush, vines and dead growth were cut out and hauled away, and the ground along both fences and down the narrow side yard beside the house was cleared back to bare soil, opening up the full width of the property again.

The pond was cleared of weeds and debris, and the stone around it was restacked into a clean, defined edge with the water open once more. The shrubs at the foot of the deck steps were cut back into shape, and a new curving bed line was edged across the back of the yard and set with natural stone.

With the overgrowth gone, a new board privacy fence was installed along the side of the yard, giving the cleared space a clean, finished boundary.

Result:

A back yard reclaimed from overgrowth — open ground from fence to fence, the pond and pergola deck back in view, and a clean, defined space that is ready to use and easy to keep.

Before the cleanup: a thicket of saplings and brush standing over knee-high dead grass at the back of the yard, a neighbor’s shed beyond the fence.
Before the cleanup, from above: brush and saplings filling the corner of the yard around the garden shed and up against the back fence.

Before & after

From Overgrown to Open Ground

The same places on the property, photographed before the work began and after it was finished.

  • The back yard from above before the cleanup: brush and saplings spilling off the fence lines around the pergola deck, the pond and a weedy lawn.
The same yard straight down after the cleanup: cleared ground along the fence lines, the stone-edged pond beside the pergola, and stone set in a curving line.

  • Looking down on the pond beside the deck before the cleanup: its water barely showing through weeds, dead grass and loose, scattered stone.
The same pond after the cleanup: open water inside a restacked stone edge, the pergola deck beside it and cleared ground running to the new fence.
