Front Entry Beds & Raised Planter

The Riley residence from the street: columnar junipers and rounded evergreens in decorative rock along the house, the raised block planter in front and new sod to the drive.

This project rebuilt the front entry of the home around two curving beds, one on either side of the front steps. The larger bed is edged with a low, capped block wall that follows its curves along the lawn and rises into a raised planter where the bed meets the front walk.

Two designs were drawn for the front of the home: one edging the beds with a row of boulders, the other with the block wall. The block-wall design is the one that was built.

For year-round structure, the planting plan uses columnar Taylor junipers, Graham Blandy boxwood, yews and a globe blue spruce. Little Quick Fire hydrangeas, a dappled willow, ornamental grasses and Pardon My Cerise bee balm fill in around them, and a Daub’s Frosted juniper standard is the centerpiece of the raised planter.

The beds are finished in decorative rock with natural boulders, and new sod was laid up to the new bed lines.

Result:

A front entry with clean lines and year-round structure: curving beds, a raised planter and layered evergreen planting, built from the design that was chosen.

Straight down on the Riley entry: the capped block wall curving around a decorative rock bed of evergreens and boulders, the steps and walk, and new sod beyond.
The Riley entry from above the porch: rock beds either side of the steps, the low block wall following the curve of the bed, and new sod reaching to the sidewalk.
The raised planter at the Riley residence: a curved block wall holding decorative rock, boulders and young shrubs, with the bed running on along the side of the house.
The Riley residence color design plan: shrubs and grasses in curving beds either side of the front steps, a round planting bed beside the walk and a shade tree in the lawn.
The Riley residence from above the lawn: the raised block planter, the curving rock bed along the house with columnar junipers, and the street and trees beyond.
The front of the Riley residence: columnar junipers and rounded shrubs in decorative rock beneath the windows, the raised block planter and new sod in front.
