How a hardscape gets built, and why the base decides everything
Almost everything that goes wrong with a patio or a wall was decided before the first stone was set. This is the sequence, from excavation to the last joint.
Hardscaping is everything in a landscape that is not alive. Paving, walls, steps, edging, gravel, timber structures — the built half of a garden, as opposed to the planted half, which the trade calls softscape.
It is a useful word to have, because it separates two kinds of work that behave completely differently. Softscape grows, changes with the season and can be moved next spring if you get it wrong. Hardscape is construction. It is based, compacted and set, it carries load, and correcting it means taking it out.
Most yards contain four or five hardscape elements. Knowing which is which makes it much easier to brief anybody you hire, and much harder to be sold something that does not address the actual problem.

The right-hand column is the one worth reading twice. In every case the thing that decides how long the element lasts is invisible once the job is finished — and in every case it is the part that gets cut when a price is being driven down.

A lawn is a surface you can walk on when it is dry. A patio is a surface you can put a table on in March. Every hard surface sheds water somewhere. Built well, that is a feature: falls are set deliberately, water is directed away from the house, and the surface stays dry. Built badly, a patio is a purpose-built funnel pointing at your foundation. This is the single most common way a good-looking installation causes a problem it did not have before.
Sloped ground is either terraced or eroding. A retaining wall converts an unusable bank into two usable levels, and on a lot with any real fall it is often the enabling piece — the thing that has to happen before a patio or a lawn is even possible.
Set properly, a paver surface or a block wall is a one-time cost with a long horizon. That is the argument for spending on the parts nobody sees: the base, the drainage, the compaction. Those are what turn a purchase into an asset instead of a maintenance item.

Four failure modes account for most of the hardscape we are called out to look at, and none of them are exotic.
Three of those four are decided below ground, which is why the strongest question you can ask a contractor is not what the pavers cost. It is what is going underneath them, and how deep.
The two halves get quoted separately often enough that people assume they can be bought separately, and on most properties they cannot — not without paying twice.
The dependency runs in one direction. Hardscape sets the levels, and planting has to live with them. A bed built up against a wall that has no drainage behind it saturates the backfill. A tree placed where its roots will eventually run under a patio is a slow-motion decision about that patio. Irrigation lines and lighting cable want to be laid while the ground is already open, not trenched back through finished beds a season later.
It also runs the other way in one specific respect worth knowing about. Mature planting shades and shelters hardscape, which measurably slows how quickly a surface weathers — and it softens the edges, which is most of the difference between a courtyard and a slab. A yard that is all structure ages harder than one where the two are planned together.
The practical consequence for a homeowner is about sequencing rather than budget. You can phase a project across seasons, but the phase boundaries need to fall between the structural work and the planting, not through the middle of either.
There is no correct ratio, and anybody quoting one is guessing. The usable answer is functional: hardscape the ground you want to use in any weather and the ground that has to be held, and plant the rest. A yard that is mostly paving reads as a car park and sheds a great deal of water; a yard with none is a yard that is off-limits for a good part of the year.
Where the balance falls is a design question rather than a taste question, because it depends on your fall, your soil and how you actually intend to use the space.
